Question: What scriptural basis would you give someone who says naming names when we expose wrong ideas in the church is not our place or calling?

I’m grateful for this discussion. It’s one I’ve been involved with most of my Christian life.

First, I would ask what scriptural basis is there for prohibiting the naming of names?

Stating the names of people we disagree with is not prohibited by the New Testament.

It’s reasonable to address, by name, people we are iron-sharpening-iron with.

Regarding warnings, there are examples in the New Testament: 2 Timothy 4:10, 3 John 9.

Romans 16:17 – Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.

We are told to contend for the faith and to warn people and to speak the truth in love.

Effective warnings require the truth of who the deceivers are. See Matthew 24:4. Consider the concept of the Ezekiel Watchman, Ezekiel 33:1-11.

Consider the scriptures here: Contend for the Faith

Also, some say warning causes division. But who causes division? The one who brings heresy into the church or the one who warns against it?
